German University Admissions: Requirements, Deadlines, and Strategy
Germany offers world-class education — often tuition-free — but the admissions path has rules you cannot afford to ignore.

Germany attracts over 400,000 international students annually — and for good reason. Public universities charge little to no tuition, engineering and science programs rank among the world's best, and graduates benefit from Europe's strongest economy. But German admissions operate on a different logic than US or UK systems. Understanding Studienkolleg, uni-assist, and direct application routes is essential before you start.
How the German system works
German higher education divides into Universitäten (research universities) and Fachhochschulen (Universities of Applied Sciences). Most international students target Universitäten for bachelor's and master's degrees in fields like engineering, medicine, business, and natural sciences.
Admissions are largely grade-driven and rule-based rather than holistic. If your qualifications meet the criteria and spaces are available, you are admitted. At oversubscribed programs — especially at institutions like TU Munich (Technische Universität München) and LMU Munich (Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München) — NC (Numerus Clausus) restrictions apply, meaning a minimum GPA cutoff determines eligibility.
Checking your qualification status
Before anything else, determine whether your secondary school diploma directly qualifies you for German university admission. The anabin database and DAAD resources list which foreign credentials are recognized.
If your qualification is not directly equivalent to the German Abitur, you must complete a Studienkolleg — a one-year preparatory program ending in the Feststellungsprüfung (assessment exam). Studienkolleg tracks align with your intended field: T-Kurs for technical programs, M-Kurs for medicine, W-Kurs for business, and G-Kurs for humanities.
Skipping Studienkolleg when it is required guarantees rejection. Verify your status early — Studienkolleg applications have their own deadlines, often a year before your intended university start.
uni-assist and direct applications
Many universities route international applications through uni-assist, a centralized service that verifies your documents and converts grades to the German system. uni-assist charges a processing fee per application and adds several weeks to your timeline.
Some universities — including certain programs at TU Munich and LMU — accept direct applications or use their own portals. Always check each program's website individually. Applying through the wrong channel wastes time and money.
Required documents typically include:
- Certified copies of transcripts and diplomas
- Language certificate (German or English, depending on program)
- Passport copy
- CV and motivation letter (for some programs)
- APS certificate (for Chinese and Vietnamese applicants)
Language requirements
Most bachelor's programs are taught in German and require TestDaF (minimum TDN 4 in all sections) or DSH-2. English-taught programs exist — particularly at master's level — and accept IELTS or TOEFL. Do not assume a program is English-taught based on the university website alone; verify the specific Studiengang.
Start language preparation 12–18 months before your target intake. German proficiency takes longer than most students expect. Our IELTS preparation resources help for English-taught programs; for German-taught paths, plan TestDaF or DSH preparation alongside.
Deadlines and intake periods
German universities primarily admit for winter semester (starting October) and summer semester (starting April). Winter semester deadlines for uni-assist applications typically fall between mid-January and mid-July, depending on the university. Summer semester deadlines are usually November to January.
Popular programs at TU Munich and LMU often have earlier deadlines and limited seats. Submit applications as early as possible within the window — late submissions are not accepted, regardless of how strong your profile is.
NC restrictions and competitive programs
Programs with NC at top universities require GPAs at or above a published cutoff. Cutoffs fluctuate yearly based on applicant volume. Medicine, psychology, biology, and computer science are consistently oversubscribed.
If your GPA falls below NC for your first choice, consider:
- Related programs at the same university with lower cutoffs
- The same program at a less oversubscribed university
- Studienkolleg to strengthen your academic standing

Student visa and blocked account
Non-EU students need a student visa and proof of financial resources — currently approximately €11,904 per year in a blocked account (Sperrkonto). Visa appointments at German consulates can take months. Book early after receiving your Zulassung (admission letter).

FAQ
Is Studienkolleg mandatory for all international students? No — only for students whose secondary qualifications are not directly recognized. Check anabin or consult an advisor before assuming either path.
How much does uni-assist cost? Fees vary by number of university applications. Budget for processing fees plus document translation and certification costs separately.
Can I study in Germany in English? Master's programs in English are common; bachelor's programs in English exist but are limited. Most undergraduate paths require German at B2/C1 level.
What GPA do I need for TU Munich? It depends on the program. Engineering and CS programs often require equivalent grades of 1.5–2.0 on the German scale (roughly top 10–20% of your class). Check current NC values each year.
When should I apply for winter semester 2027? Begin document preparation in mid-2026. uni-assist applications typically open in December 2026 with deadlines between January and July 2027, depending on the university.
